More good stuff

Hey! I’m back with even more good stuff. Let’s start out with this story of a mammal that survived the meteor that killed the dinosaurs.

16_24_50_151_file This beast is Necrolestes Patagonensis, meaning grave robber since it lived underground. It was alive after the death of dinosaurs, but it was related to another mammal that lived before the dino death. The Grave Robber was just recently discovered – how can that be? This is the Lazarus effect, which is where something was around a lot longer than expected. For example, the Ginko tree – they were thought to be extinct until someone found one. Scientists think it took so long to find the Grave Robber because of it’s extraordinary burrowing powers. Crazy!

Next, check out this gravity-powered lamp. No batteries or fuel required – all you do is fill a bag with sand or rocks or dirt or whatever, and as it descends, working by a pulley system, it gives half an hour of light. I couldn’t find the video on YouTube to put here, but here’s the link.

Check out an awesome flying lego drone! This lego drone can fly in the air and even complete predetermined missions in autopilot mode. Once again, here’s the link.

Finally, a song made out of old computer parts:

The song is Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye. A glockenspiel is used for the xylophone, Two hard drives for the drums and cymbal, an HP Scanjet 3C for vocals, and two oscilloscopes for guitar and bass. Crazy!

Well, that’s it for now. Comment to let me know how I’m doing!

Good things

Hey! I’m back with more good websites and other things, and I’ll start off with this guy who can only make art while he’s sleeping!

1 This painting is the work of Welsh-Australian artist Lee Hadwin. Yes, he can only make his art when he’s asleep, and he has been doing this for 32 years. He doesn’t know what he’s made until he wakes up. He also feels that it’s not really his art, as he doesn’t remember making it. Right now, he’s selling his work on eBay and plans to give half of the proceeds to the Missing People charity. Good job, using money for a good cause!

Check out this quiz to find out what kind of civil rights leader you are. Answer six questions and there you are! At each result it also gives you people in the civil rights movement in the same category as you. Fun, check it out here.

Next, check out this awesome website full of awesome DIY stuff. If you click on “skills”, you can check out all the different skills to have, and figure out your strongest area! A really great website, I love it, check it out here.

Next, a robot that has learned to play ping pong! This robot has a camera in it, and a library of possible shots. The robot learned from watching humans, and after an hour of practice it was returning 88% of shots. I couldn’t find the video on youtube, but here’s the link.

Finally, take a good long look at this:

artist-creates-real-clouds-indoors-pics--de94f81802

00_19_09_194_file Crazy, right? Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde sets a room’s temperature, humidity and light to a certain level, and creates the clouds with a fog machine. Nice job!

Well, that’s it for this post. Comment to let me know how I’m doing!

Treehugger articles

Hey! Check out these awesome articles I read on treehugger.com. First, this awesome micro-apartment entry in a contest:

Domicile_-_Section_-_Macro_Sea_Method_Design.jpg.492x0_q85_crop-smartPretty awesome, right? This was only the runner-up in the competition, but it’s still crazy and fun. Called DOMICILE and created by a collaboration between Macro Sea and Method Design. I love the design, from the mudroom right up to the skybox!

Next up, check out these awesome dogs that are trained to help the environment! These dogs have all sorts of jobs, from tracking orca feces to detecting illegally caught shark fins. Check out all their stories here!

conservation-dog.jpg.644x0_q100_crop-smart Next up on my list, this awesome jail for cell phones:

phonecell.jpg.492x0_q85_crop-smart This is actually a pretty good idea. Basically, you just put everyone’s phones in, set the timer for however long you’d like, and there you go. If anyone tries to get at them, a buzzer will go off, alerting you. You don’t really need it – I admit, it is a bit of a waste of plastic – but it’s still a great way to get your family away from their phones! One only costs $20. Next, an awesome project that teaches you how to power a calculator or LED bulb with a few pennies! Here’s what you need.

One or two LED bulbs

A cheap, small calculator

Electrical tape

Zinc washers

Scissors

Cardboard

An electrolyte such as salt water, vinegar or lemon juice

Sand paper

13 pennies that are dated 1982 or later

penny-battery-step-1.jpg.644x0_q100_crop-smart

The first step is to unscrew the calculator to get the battery. Remove it. Then, pull out the negative and positive leads (look them up if you don’t know what they are), and attach them to  the terminal. I won’t put the rest here, since it would take up too much room, but you can find the rest of the instructions right here!

Last but certainly not least on my list, these ideas to decrease the risk of pedestrians and cyclists. One idea is an exterior airbag. It covers the bottom half of the windshield, and a camera under the rear-view mirror watches for pedestrians and cyclists. If the bumper on the windshield detects pressure, the airbag comes out. It would look something like this:

1681267-slide-tno-savecap-40kmh-airbag-far-side-8nov2012-side-view-120ms.jpeg.492x0_q85_crop-smart This idea is all well and good, but some people say that cyclists should be the ones that need to watch out. However, a study shows that people drive slower without their seatbelts on. This is because drivers drive less cautiously when they feel more protected, and more cautiously when they feel less protected. So with an airbag, they’ll be reckless. However, there is another idea. This idea is to remove seatbelts from cars and put a big metal spike in the middle of the steering wheel. Maybe they’ll slow down then!

Well, I hope you enjoyed today’s post. Make sure to check out other posts, and comment to let me know how I’m doing!

Even more interesting things

Hey! Today I have even MORE interesting things to show you. The interesting things just keep piling up, and this is where I put them! First of all, a food fight that happened at Abraham Lincoln’s second inaugural feast. During the feast, many delicious items were served, including turtle stew, burned almond ice cream, and pickled oysters. The table was only meant to serve 300 people, so naturally, a fight broke out. Food was flying everywhere! Doesn’t sound like a very nice feast.

Next to show are these two interesting travel articles about tourist traps. Check out this first one, about tourist traps that we secretly love, and this one, about overrated tourist traps. The second one also provides advice about what to see instead! Check out these funny replies to an invitation to a scientist’s ball:

486075_535059423181740_210180707_nPretty funny, right? If you don’t know some of these scientists, just look ’em up. Next up on the list, an awesome carpet made of 4000 watches! Created by Heidi Voet, the carpet was made by fastening the straps together. The watches were made to chime in unison, but of course, things will arise and the watches will chime out of unison. This will reflect Heidi’s idea that chaos will ensue with the march of time. Check out this pic.2

Last but certainly not least on the list, this awesome website, howstuffworks.com! This is a pretty cool website with lots of things to check out about – what else? – how stuff works! You can portal yourself there right here. Well, would you look at the time! I’m going to have to wrap up for now. But stick around, I’ll always be back with more!

More interesting things

Hey! I’ve seen lots of interesting things as of late, so here’s tons more stuff to check out! First, this diver taking a swim in Jellyfish Lake:

206014_547752461909209_339178912_nIn Jellyfish Lake, you can swim with hundreds of jellyfish that lost their sting. The lake was originally connected to the Pacific ocean, but because of water levels dropping, the lake was disconnected and the jellyfish were trapped inside. Looks fun to me!

Next, check out this cat named Kido, who has become quite the professional at shell games:

Amazing, right? Kido’s owner says that the purpose of the video was not to show how smart he was, but to show that Kido was willing to play the game and actually got it right. Animals are smarter than we think! Check out these two awesome websites, unusualcreatures.com and macaulaylibrary.org. Unusual creatures has lots of information about – what else? – unusual creatures! Macaulay Library is the best website for animal audio recordings. Simply look up your desired animal, and there you go! Next, this macro-photography of water:

537167_531468996874116_1967414083_nThis is pretty crazy. They look like mushrooms, don’t they? But it’s water. Wow. This next photo might not make sense at first, but it will:

69666_456447927743095_658900420_nHere’s the story: During a cross-country race, Abel Mutai (guy in front) was in first place, and Iván Fernández Anaya was in a distant second. As Iván ran, he saw Abel stop 10 meters short of the finish line, thinking that he crossed it. Rather than cross it first, Iván came up to Abel and used gestures to show him the finish line, and let him cross it first. What an act of kindness and honesty! We should ALL be like that.

To finish off, check out this funny video of a bad lip reading of the NFL…

Pretty funny! Comment to let me know how I’m doing, and I’ll see you all next time!

Cool ice drummers

Hey! check out these incredible people who used a frozen lake as a musical instrument. This amazing sound is produced solely by the ice. It’s amazing what nature can do! The woman who discovered it did so by accident. Crazy, and it sounds really good, too! Check it out.

Crazy, right? I wonder what other musical instruments lie hidden in nature. It can’t be that hard – all we have to do is look! Make sure to comment, let me know how I’m doing, and if you’ve ever experienced music in nature, tell me about it! See you on the flip side!

Lots of interesting things

nick_cave09Hey guys! Today I just wanted to show you some random, interesting stuff. Believe it or not, each of these is a piece of wearable artwork called a SoundSuit, made by Nick Cave. He searches shops, looking for random assorted items, and then takes them and builds something like the ones above. Cool, right? Check out more here, and you can scroll to the bottom for more awesome art. Nice work, Nick!

Next on my list of interesting things is this video of a guy walking a tightrope under a full moon in Yosemite. I couldn’t find it on Youtube, but here’s the link to the website it’s on. Crazy! Next, check out this guy named Nathan Sawaya, who makes crazy realistic lego sculptures and takes photos of them with his partner Dean West. Can you find the lego sculpture in this photo?

11

If can’t, try taking a second look at the dog. Check out more cool realistic lego sculptures here. Nice job, Nathan and Dean!

If you’re interested in science, then this is for you. Check out this cool picture of what we’ve discovered in science this week:

582422_529684823719200_226872189_n

Cool stuff, huh? If you check out this link, you can hit “see more” underneath the photo to get links to all of the amazing full stories. Last but certainly not least, check out the 29th Annual Harbin Ice and Snow Festival in China. In the Ice and Snow world, you can see amazing snow and ice sculptures. For this year’s three month festival, the theme was castles. Amazing! Check out the photo at the end of the post, and see more here.

Well, that wraps up for today. Make sure to comment to let me know how I’m doing. Hope you enjoyed, and check out this incredible photo of this year’s Ice and Snow Festival. Ta-ta for now!
