Kioni Marshall + interesting website

Hey! I’m here to show you this NYC poet, Kioni Marshall, who has recently joined the poet ranks of NYC. However, there’s a big difference between her and her fellow poets:

She’s only 12.

Going by her stage name, Popcorn, Kioni writes about experiences that even she hasn’t gone through, including rape, murder, and loneliness. Listen to this excerpt from her poem, “Scraps”:

“What do you think when you see my smile? The nose of the father that you left with a child? Or is it my brown eyes that will never be yours? Is that the reason I’ve been feeding off scraps of love ever since you left?”

As you can see, she can feel an emotion and express it through words even though she hasn’t yet gone through it. This is an amazing ability, and she is wise beyond her years. Already Kioni has performed at one of the top poetry cafés, and has a unique voice that’s one half hunt-you-down-and-strike-you-with-a-chair, and one half crawl-under-a-rock-and-hide. She’ll definitely become one of 2013’s top poets, and as she says in her own words: “I believe poetry should be free-style, free written. The more space a bird has to fly, and the higher it can fly, the higher it probably will fly.” Learn more about Popcorn here!

On a completely unrelated note, check out this cool website, environmental graffiti. It’s got some cool stuff about lots of different subjects, totally worth checking out! Hope you enjoy these two awesome links. I’m out!
