3 interesting stories

Hey! Check out these three cool stories, guaranteed to make you quiver with knowledge!

First of all, a hidden London relic. In Westminster, if you ever go to the Ministry of Defense, you’ll be standing right above a Gothic crypt, hidden nuclear bunkers, and King Henry VIII’s wine cellar! The wine cellar was built in the early 1500’s by Cardinal Wolsey, to impress King Henry. But, the interior decor was too sophisticated. King Henry fired Wolsey,  and claimed his home as his own. After King Henry’s palace burnt down, the land was put up for lease. It wasn’t easy to put the cellar in the new building, so they encased it in concrete and buried it 20 feet down. It’s still there today!

This was all well and good until the great depression, when wheat prices went down. The government promised assistance in the form of subsidies, but it never came. Instead, 20,000 emus came and destroyed land. The farmers tried to get help from the Ministry of Agriculture, but got help from the Ministry of War, who sent two regiments of soldiers to dispose of the emus. But eventually, the emus scattered, ammo was wasted, and the plan to trap them failed. Eventually, the emus won. Weird!

My last story is about Charles Darwin and his worm experiments. Before his theory of evolution, Darwin conducted experiments on worms. He had his wife and children play music for the worms, and he confirmed that they cannot hear. In later years, he conducted an experiment where a large, flat stone was laid in his yard, and he recorded the depth that it sank over a few decades. He was able to prove the value of worms as natural agents of soil turnover and also determined why ancient ruins are buried below the ground. He even published a book about worms which, during his lifetime, outsold The Origin Of The Species.
